A private wine project from the Wachau

Sometimes there is a glass in front of you and you want to know who made it.

We are Jürgen and Sabine and we live in Mautern an der Donau. When a wine catches our attention, we ask the winery about it and write down what is behind it: the people, the vineyards and the decisions you cannot read off the label.

How we work

Why this site exists

Because you cannot tell from a bottle how much work, origin and how many decisions went into it. So we ask, and then we write it down.

Small

We are right at the beginning

This site is new and grows slowly, because every portrait starts with a conversation. We would rather have it right than have a lot of it.

Close by

From the area we live in

We live in the Wachau. Kremstal, Kamptal and Traisental are on our doorstep and help explain why a wine tastes the way it does.

Curious

The work is what interests us

Site, soil, harvest, cellar, family history, sometimes a grape variety hardly anyone still grows. That says more than any label.

Origin

The Wachau is home. The neighbouring regions help put it in context.

Good wines rarely happen by accident. Landscape, climate, soils, village structure and the decisions each winery makes explain why a wine tastes the way it does.

Wachau

Wachau

Wachau wine is shaped by steep terraces, cool Danube air and white wines that make Grüner Veltliner and Riesling feel especially precise.

Kremstal

Kremstal

Kremstal wine connects Krems, Danube terraces, loess soils and the Göttweigerberg in Grüner Veltliner and Riesling with clear tension.

Kamptal

Kamptal

Kamptal wine shows how the Kamp river, Heiligenstein, loess, rock and cool air give Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Pinot-family varieties tension.

Traisental

Traisental

Traisental wine is versatile, limestone-shaped and often strikingly precise: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and small wineries show plenty of origin in a compact region.

Dates in the region

Tastings, open cellar doors and reasons for a day out.

Events we would happily go to ourselves. The organiser and the programme are named with each date.
